A few days of feeling sad or depressed does not mean depression. Depression is a very serious disease that can last for years. Studies have show that around 15 million Americans are affected by this illness each and every year. And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care. It’s the mental illness stereotypes, things like the crazy eyed old man, that make people think twice before seeking treatment for depression. Depression is a progressive illness. Without attention it will become more and more severe. People should pay attention to the signs.

Many things cause depression. It can by biological, genetic, physical and emotional. Simple daily life and surroundings are important. Stress and other negative influences have been known to contribute. Complicated diseases like depression aren’t easy to crack. We also recognize the intricacy of man’s mind. To learn how the mind works, doctors and researches are studying it each day. It’s clear that it’s an imbalance of chemical compounds in the brain that creates depression. We are learning more every day about how the whole process works. The phrase is “learning is half the battle” and with depression knowledge is power.

There are a variety of medications available to treat depression. Miracle treatments also exist, but many times these are empty claims. Clinical tests to prove something really works in treating depression are required. There was a time in our history if you were afflicted by anything that was associated with mental illness you were thrown into a mental ward and lost in the system. That is a thing of the past, thank goodness. In 1988 the anti-depressant ‘Prozac’ first hit the market in the United States. Although it has side effects it is widely used and it is effective.

Since then a new class of anti-depressants has become popular as well. The SSRI or (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) like Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are all being used to treat depression today. These work even though they too show some side effects. The market is also ripe with herbal medications and treatments. The majority of these that have been proven to work as well as the anti-depressants contain the St. John Wort extract ingredient called ‘hyperforin’. Some herbal remedies don’t contain this ingredient in the proper strength so they don’t work. Be careful, do your research and you will find effective medications to treat depression.
