Often a panic attack starts because of fear or embarrassment. In some cases they can be completely out of the blue, like in cases of panic disorder. You may be wondering what causes people to suffer from these attacks.
Attacks have been linked mostly to anxiety disorders which is the umbrella term for specific disorders like agoraphobia and social anxiety. Social phobia is a very common condition that normally starts from a young age but can affect persons for their entire lifetime. It is developed from negative social experiences, especially those of inadequacy, fear and embarrassment.
Public humiliation, rejection, ridicule and criticism can shape a young child’s mind to grow up fearing standing out and being in front of others. Children that are affected with social anxiety don’t simply grow out of it when they reach adulthood. Without seeking Anxiety help or treatment many people continue to suffer from social anxiety.
Social anxiety is the last of the anxiety disorders to be discovered, and people with this disorder were previously thought to be simply shy. Unlike shyness, people with social phobia have extreme feelings of fear and being embarrassed in social situations as opposed to experiencing embarrassment.
A student might miss their first day at college so that they don’t have to introduce themselves; your hands are clammy, your heart is racing and you make little eye contact on a date; an office worker calls in sick on their day of presentation; a colleague might drink excessively to cover their anxiety at a party; and a shopper might shop late for groceries when the shops are quiet.;
It’s not hard to see how devastating this condition can be in everyday life for a sufferer. Simple measures in how to stop a panic attack include preemptive measures. For example, if you have a presentation to give take the time to prepare everything in detail. If you know what you’re going to say, then begin preparing yourself mentally.
Relax and take some deep breaths while thinking positively. Visualize the day of the meeting and see yourself doing amazingly well. Instead of interpreting physical sensations such as a fast heartbeat as fear, see it as excitement. Tell yourself that you know what you’re going to say and if you just present it, then it’ll be fine.
Think of a person who you aspire to be or who’s confident. Physical symptoms may feel frightening but to focus on then only make them seem bigger than they are. Take time to breathe and relax yourself and realize that you can get through it.
When the stress response triggers and you feel your body surge with adrenaline, choose to accept these sensations as exhilaration and enthusiasm rather than fear. Not focusing on the physical sensations is one way in how to stop a panic attack because you’re not treating it as a panic attack anymore.
In time you can associate the feelings differently and recondition the mind to accept these feelings as positive ones. With practice you can make this a habit which can be applied to other areas of your life. Click on the link for an advanced and profound cure for panic attacks.
