What should I do if I think that somebody is actually having a genuine panic attack?

Talk to the person and try to work out if they have any insight into what is occuring. Ask them whether they had ever had a panic attack, like this, ever before. If they reply in a way that suggests that this is a frequent event, then you need to try and calm them down, in both physical and psychological sense.

Give them your name and try to use their first name too.

What about if I am not clear as to whether there is something serious going on or if it is all just a panicker?

This is a tough one as the differences between a panic attack and more serious disorders are often minor. Even doctors need to use diagnostic tests to help them make the distinction - so you will need to make a judgement.

Follow the basics and don’t worry if the diagnostics are too demanding. Then check to see whether they are wearing a medic alert bracelet or necklace. Obviously, heed any advice given by the alert. You may well need to call the medics sooner than you might otherwise do.

What precisely should I do to how to cure panic attacks if I know that the person is having a panic attack?

Be calmness personified. Speak in short sentences and keep your messages clear. Reassure the person that they will be fine and try to explain to them what is happening. They may come up with some good ideas. Try to empower them and get them to feel strong and not small. Being frightened can be life saving.

However, in the incorrect circumstances it can be unhelpful and at times embarrassing.
