It’s normal to feel a little nervous and shy when giving a presentation or introducing yourself to a group of new people. Sufferers of social anxiety disorder however have extreme fears of embarrassment in social situations and avoid them.
This is actually quite a common disorder which falls under the umbrella of anxiety disorders. Social anxiety disorder is very treatable and the success rate of therapy is high. Medication can help alleviate symptoms of social phobia but it is not a long term solution.
In addition to treatments, sufferers can apply self help techniques to help them overcome Social Anxiety. Relaxation and visualization techniques can be highly effective especially when practiced regularly. Because the brain sees vivid imagination the same way as it sees a real life experience you can essentially rewire it without having to lift a finger.
Our thoughts have a lot of control over our emotions. You might feel anxious and scared just by thinking of something you fear. But the imagination can be used to produce positive behaviors as well as negative ones. Associations are made stronger when a person practices or experiences something repeatedly.
Most professional sprinters imagine their race before it happens. Some top major league baseball players imagine swinging and making perfect contact repeatedly. Through mental practice they improve their ability just like through normal practice. By using the imagination you can change your behavior. You can use it to overcome your social anxiety and boost self confidence.
Let’s imagine that you have to give a presentation in a few days. On finding out you become very anxious and you start imagining how embarrassed you will be on the day. You start to get anxiety symptoms like a tight chest, shaking and a racing heart. At the meeting you feel totally terrified, embarrassed and a complete wreck.
When a social anxiety sufferer constantly focuses on the worst that can happen it’s easy to see how it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. By using positive visualizations and affirmations it is possible to break from old habits and learn new ones. With regular practice fears and phobias can be overcome.
Start practicing being confident and in control now. Locate a quiet place for you to be seated and close your eyes. Let your muscles relax and inhale deeply gradually filling your lungs with air. Visualize yourself standing in front of you with incredible confidence, ready to handle anything. Visualize in detail the way you would speak and walk if you had this confidence. Think about how your presence would be and how others would see you.
Build this image and think about you living your life without Anxiety Symptoms. Let that internal voice in your head tell you positive things. Tell yourself how confident and strong you are. Imagine yourself standing in front of everyone at your next meeting and giving an amazing presentation. See yourself in complete control and everybody giving you praise at the end.
Focus on this image for 10 minutes and finally open your eyes. Did you feel good? Giving a presentation now doesn’t seem as daunting as it did before. With regular practice you’ll feel less and less fearful. Think of confidence as a guise that you can slip on until you become that person. What’s more, even when you feel anything but confident inside, project it on the outside. If you can learn to project confidence, in time your subconscious will gradually make this state more habitual.
