Well panic attacks are caused out of nowhere. So we will ask, what is the reason or cause of panic or fright attacks? Like one moment you are ok, and the very next moment you start crying. Hence, many patients fail to realize that panic attacks are result of nowhere. At first, the attack is result of a certain stimulus. It can be just anything like smell, a specific person or even a place. Anyways for preventing the panic attacks; it is must to lower down the causes.
It is known that panic attacks are caused because of internal or external causes. Internal triggers includes the panic attacks like memories, feelings, certain thoughts, and physical sensations e.g. headaches. While external causes of panic attacks include sudden changes in lighting, temperature, or sound level, strange smells or sounds, and certain places.
However why should a certain smell or taste cause a panic attack? Just think about a person suffering from peanut allergy. Peanuts usually are harmless to the body, and normal people’s immune systems do not react. But then to a person suffering from peanuts allergy, peanuts are like deadly poison and he/she starts reacting as soon as the peanut is consumed. In the same way, a person having sensitive nervous system or inheritance to peanuts reacts with the peanut consumption in a panic way.
How does this happen? Let us say for an instance your trigger is a texture of linen. You are travelling, and you spend the night at a motel. You slip into bed, under the linen sheets. For some reasons, you start sweating. Then, you are just in no mood to have a panic attack. The anxiety builds up, until you are having a full-fledged panic attack.
HOW TO GET AWAY FROM TRIGGERS AND THINGS THAT CAUSE PANIC ATTACKS :
In an ideal world, you want to avoid your triggers. If you stay away from triggers, you can prevent panic attacks. In the linen matter, you can substitute other fabrics. And, if you are allergic to sensitive lights then stop moving to dance clubs. Some little changes can make your upcoming life safe and secure.
CONFRONTING THE TRIGGERS:
Even though you will wish to avoid panic attacks or its triggers, they are not always within your control. As if it’s difficult to avoid the smell of a cigarette as we can’t control on whether a passerby smokes or stops. Hence, some patients themselves try to know their sensitivity by repeating such unpleasant stimulus.
You might be apprehensive about trying this, and who wouldn’t be? None wants to suffer from a panic attack on a purpose. Anyways getting used to your triggers can help you to prevent panic attacks in long run. For an example people suffering from phobia try to expose themselves frequently with the kind of fear they possess. Initially they are face to some kind of threat but slowly they lose their fears.
Remember it is important to always contact a doctor or psychiatrist before confronting the cause of panic attacks. They have some long or short run triggers and exercise that helps you to fight with your triggers. Also, if you are having a heart condition this may not prove good to you.
Generally, for most, it is best to increase the exposure gradually. Just don’t take tension, if you even fail to fight with the cause of panic attacks.. It is fine as everything needs time to heal.
