Diagnosing Anxiety And Panic Attacks As A Panic Disorder
Friday, June 25th, 2010    Subscribe To Our FeedThere are two types of anxiety disorder: one with agoraphobia, the other with agoraphobia, however, both must have a diagnosed anxiety and panic attack. Results show that panic attack are common and is a major issue in the development of the diagnostic criteria for panic disorder where there should be six panic attacks during a period of six weeks. Three attacks within a period of three weeks for a moderate disease, or four attacks in a period of four weeks for a severe disease.
It is not, however, necessary to specify a minimum number of panic attacks or a time frame, but it is required that at least one attack be followed by at least a month-long period of concern about having another panic attack or about the implications of the attack or a significant change in behaviour. It is also required by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM IV) that the panic attacks be unexpected or uncued and satisfies at least four of the symptoms listed in that criterion. It can, however, allow for an expected or situationally predisposed attack.
The first time an attack occurs; it is completely spontaneous or may follow times of excitement, physical exertion, sexual activity, or moderate emotional trauma. As the criteria have been set, the clinician should attempt to ascertain any habit or situation that usually precedes the events. Events that can include unusual patterns of sleeping or eating, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, or specific environmental settings like harsh lighting at work. The attacks should escalate after a period of ten minutes of symptoms felt. Patients will feel confused and have trouble concentrating. So these are some techniques through which you can kick panic away from your life.
Physical signs include tachypnea, tachycardia, palpitations, dyspnea and sweating. With these, the patient would blindly seek help to alleviate the situation. The episodes normally last twenty to thirty minutes and rarely more than one hour. There should be a formal mental status examination during a panic attack which should show rumination, difficulty in speaking like stuttering or stammering, and impaired memory. The patients may also experience sepression or depersonalization during an attack.
