Well panic attacks are caused out of nowhere. So that is why we ask what is the cause of panic attacks? One moment you’re fine, the next you’re shaking and crying. Yet many patients fail to realize that the panic attack does not just happen out of nowhere. Thus, many patients fail to know that panic attacks are result of just nowhere. Frequently, the attack is triggered, by a certain stimulus. It could be anything including a particular place, smell or person. Anyways for lowering down the panic attacks; it is must to prevent their causes.
The particular triggers or cause of panic attacks can be either internal or external. Internal triggers include memories, feelings, certain thoughts, and physical sensations, such as headaches. External triggers include sudden changes in lighting, temperature, or sound level, strange smells or sounds, and certain places.
So just why should a certain smell or taste cause a panic attack? Try Think of a person having peanut allergy. Also, a normal person’s body or immune system does not react to the peanuts in anyways. However, the allergic individual’s immune system is hypersensitive, and reacts as if peanuts were deadly poison. Likewise, a person suffering from peanut allergy may have inherited a sensitive nervous system that forces him to react with peanuts.
How does this happen? Well let’s say your trigger is the texture of linen. You are travelling, and you spend the night at a motel. You slip into bed, under the linen sheets. For strange reasons, you begin to sweat. You are in no mood to have any other panic attack. The anxiety builds up, until you are having a full-fledged panic attack.
HOW TO GET AWAY FROM TRIGGERS AND THINGS THAT CAUSE PANIC ATTACKS :
Ideally, you need to avoid triggers. Just by avoiding triggers, you can prevent the panic attacks. As in the linen example, you can find or manage with other fabrics. And, if you are allergic to sensitive lights then stop moving to dance clubs. Just few other changes in your life can protect your sanity.
CONFRONT YOUR TRIGGERS:
Even though you will wish to avoid panic attacks or its triggers, they are not always within your control. As if it’s difficult to avoid the smell of a cigarette as we can’t control on whether a passerby smokes or stops. Hence, some patients themselves try to know their sensitivity by repeating such unpleasant stimulus.
You might be apprehensive about trying this, and who wouldn’t be? Nobody wants to have a panic attack on purpose. However, getting used to your triggers will reduce the frequency of your panic attacks in the long run. For example, people with phobias frequently expose themselves to the source of their fear. Initially they are face to some kind of threat but slowly they lose their fears.
It is imperative that before confronting and taking on the cause of panic attacks, that you always seek the advice of a doctor or a psychiatrist. They have some long or short run triggers and exercise that helps you to fight with your triggers. Also, if you are having a heart condition this may not prove good to you.
Generally, for most, it is best to increase the exposure gradually. Don’t worry if in the initial stages you fail to fight the cause of panic attacks. . It is fine as everything needs time to heal.
