The First Steps to Stop Panic Attacks

When a person is overwhelmed due to a panic attack, it more than often feels as though nothing can be done to help stop or even relieve the symptoms. Even though your panic or anxiety may seem overwhelming, there are steps to stop a panic attack that you can use. If nothing else, you can ease the symptoms so they are tolerable. Panic attacks can be caused by a variety of different things. Sometimes they are caused by unresolved issues from the past, and other times it could have been caused by an overly stressful or traumatic experience that happened more recently. For other people still, it can be caused by a lack of coping skills to handle the stress of life. Once the underlying causes of a panic attack have been identified, the individual can often have fewer panic attacks, and can function normally in their life. Panic attacks can become severe and develop into an problem called agoraphobia, a fear of leaving the house, if not addressed properly.

Precautions To Take

The first step into eliminating panic attacks is to recognize what triggers them to begin with. There are many different types of triggers, including a particular person, animal, situation, or issue that is not resolved. After you are able to identify what your trigger or triggers are, you can move on to the next step for stopping your panic attacks.

Most people who are looking to stop panic attacks have had more then one of them. With this in mind, they know what symptoms appear when an attack first starts. Knowing this, a person is more likely to be able to help talk themselves through a panic attack in order to calm themselves down. You can further help decrease the severity of the panic attack by using self talk. You do this by telling yourself that you have experienced panic attacks before and lived, thus you can do it again. Deep breathing also works well by taking slow, deep breathes from the diaphragm, it will also help one to clam down during a panic attack.

In addition to these steps to stop panic attacks, when an attack is about to start, or is already starting, there are many other preventative measures that this individual can use. Many of the people who suffer from panic attacks are hard on themselves for having them. Many times they place the blame of the attack on themselves, and/or feel they have some kind of defect.

These people need to have a better attitude towards themselves, and realize that the panic attacks are out of their control. It is important for sufferers to set realistic hopes for stopping their panic attacks, and decrease the frequency of attacks by limiting contact with the situations that cause them. They should stop smoking, drinking, and using caffeine regularly because it can lead to a panic attack.
