Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in America and affects one-third of adults. Around 10% of the adult population has persistent insomnia.
Stress provoking factors like significant personal loss like death, unemployment, marital problems, financial problem and the likes has been associated with the development of insomnia in people. Stress are known to heightened worrying and anxiety to people resulting to sleep pattern disturbance to many and difficulty in obtaining restful sleeps at night, thereby, increasing the risk of developing insomnia.
While stress has been rooted out as the main cause of insomnia to people, uncomfortable sleeping environment also plays a significant role. Sleeping in an environment where there is too much light or noise and poor ventilation can contribute to the development of insomnia. Excessive light promotes alertness and awakening, so make sure you use dim light at night. Poor ventilation promotes body heat, which increases your BMR, resulting to inability to obtain sleep.
Unfamiliarity with the sleeping environment also plays a role in the development of insomnia in many people. Have you ever experienced sleeping at other people’s bedroom and realized you couldn’t obtain sleep at all? Well, insomnia attacks are usually triggered by being unfamiliarity with the sleeping environment. Unfamiliarity with the sleeping environment increases anxiety and stress which in return results in difficulty obtaining sleep, resulting to insomnia. Changes in sleeping pattern also contribute to the development of insomnia. Jet lags and work shifts can contribute to insomnia. Acute and chronic illness as well as treatment therapies has also been associated with the development of insomnia.
