Being shy or nervous in social situations doesn’t necessarily point to social anxiety. It’s perfectly fine to feel anxious and nervous sometimes; attending a social gathering, getting interviewed for a job, or presenting a meeting. So how do we know if we are suffering from social anxiety disorder?

Social anxiety sufferers find social experiences tremendously fearful. They fear that they may embarrass themselves and be made fun of. In most cases they will try and avoid any situation that requires them to do something in front others.

When they have no choice but to confront a social experience they feel overwhelmed and have thoughts of making a clown of themselves. Negative thoughts only increase feelings of nervousness and anxiety. They become a complete nervous wreck and unable to relax.

There are a range of treatments to choose from to tackle social anxiety disorder. Although medication should not be relied upon as a cure it does have its uses. The root cause of anxiety can not be treated with medication. The usual prescribed medications are antidepressants, beta blockers and benzodiazepines which can be addictive.

Make sure that you are aware of the side effects and potential dangers of medication. It’s best to speak to a qualified professional before considering medication. Many people choose not to take medication because of the possible risks involved. There are other alternatives to consider.

Therapies include hypnosis and CBT which can greatly reduce and even cure anxiety symptoms. In this way you learn to tackle the root cause of the problem essentially curing your condition.

Built up tension an stress can feel too much to bear. Make sure to give yourself time to take a breather. Breathing exercises a few times a day can help you forget about the day and put things in perspective.

Find somewhere quiet to relax or play some soothing music. Relax and drop your muscles as you breath in slowly. Try rolling your shoulders back and forth to help ease away tension.
