What are panic attacks
Panic attacks are the sudden surges of overwhelming fear. They come without warning and without any obvious reason.
Interesting information about panic attacks
One out of every 75 people worldwide is going to experience a panic attack at one time in their lives. In any given year, about one third of American adults will have at least one panic attack. Most of these adults are never going to develop a repeated panic attack.
This is some very startling information. What this means is that anxiety attacks and panic attacks are the most common emotional disorder that we have. They are even more common than the following:
- bipolar disorder
- OCD schizophrenia
- PTSD
- ADHD
- phobias
- Depression
- alcohol abuse
This is truly amazing. The disorders listed above are very serious and when you think about panic attacks and anxiety attacks occurring more frequently than these that is extremely serious.
Another truly amazing fact is that about three fourths of the panic disorder patients are women. This could be due to the fact that women report this more frequently than men. Men are no different but the reason is is that a man may just not want to admit or even go for help when they are having a panic attack.
There is another interesting fact is that many people have suffered from a heightened anxiety after the incidences of September 11 terrorist attacks. But there are experts who say that this is a normal response to extreme events.
The next few topics are going to cover these symptoms of anxiety attacks and panic attacks. Also we will discuss the differences between the two of these and what can be done to help.
