Panic disorder history

panic disorderAs we have discussed in some of the previous articles panic disorders and anxiety disorders for the most part go untreated. There are some persons who will experience repetitive and severe panic attacks. And that is all they will experience is the panic attack. But then there are other people who are going to experience a progression of a bothersome and extremely distressing panic attack. They’re going to experience some of the side effects of a panic attack. What is listed below is typically how this occurs.

1. A person is going to experience their first panic attack. But usually if you weeks or months prior to that first attack some minor symptoms such as a fast or rapid heartbeat will occur.

2. Then what will happen is the first major panic attack. The person will usually seek medical advice and evaluation. What is usually found is nothing, the person is found to be commonly normal.

3. What happens then is the panic and anxiety attacks continue. The person continues to seek medical advice, but to no avail everything is inconclusive. There are many panic attack and anxiety attack sufferers who will actually go months and even years before they are finally properly diagnosed. By this time the person has seen many psychologists, physicians and counselors. What happens is other people see this person as a hypochondriac, because they continue to see all of these different doctors.

4. What happens now is the person who is suffering from the panic anxiety disorder is going to begin to avoid different situations. The reason for this is because they feel that it would be extremely embarrassing and sometimes even dangerous to have a panic attack or anxiety attack while they are doing this activity. The typical sufferer of panic anxiety disorders starts to think “I hate having a panic attack at all, but it would be really bad if I had one on Interstate 10. The attack would distract me and I would not be a safe driver. I could have an accident and wreck the car and I might even hurt someone else or myself.” It appears that the person is trying to avoid or have the fear of driving. But the real fear is having a panic or anxiety attack while he or she is driving.

5. These avoidance is will now increase. They will start to avoid circumstances in every day life. This will even start to extend and to avoid other activities. When this person starts to fall into this avoidance behavior it is often referred to as of Agoraphobia. This is the feeling of leaving your little controlled environment and moving out into the real world.

6. Some of the places in the activities are circumstances that are usually avoided by a person suffering from panic anxiety disorder are:

7. Now after months or even years of continuous panic and anxiety attacks and this restricted lifestyle caused by as we know the avoidance behavior, the person who is suffering from panic anxiety disorder could become demoralized, physically and/or psychologically depressed. What will happen now is some will turn to alcohol. This will be an attempt to self medicate or try to diminish the symptoms of the disorder. When this happens this is going to complicate the individual’s life. And we’ll start to mask and hide the ability to seek appropriate treatment.

8. There is a sad part to this long and traumatic sequence of events. Sadly, one out of every five person who goes untreated will try to attempt to end his or her life. They will never realize that there was treatment and hope available for them and this disorder.

Looking at the steps above, can be a sad and very dramatic sequence of events. And what we don’t want to happen is step number eight, of someone trying to attempt to take their life.
